Well its usually "Tennis anyone?", but around these parts it's "Wine Tasting Anyone!". Sure you can play tennis too, but the emergence of Arizona as a serious wine producer is all the buzz. Take the semi-documentary film "Blood into Wine" which chronicles the the passion of two young winemakers Eric Glomski and Maynard James Keenan. Eric Glomski has been making wines all his adult life, while James Maynard Keenan is best know for his rock and roll fame as a member of the group Tool. Mr Keenan sipped a glass of wine along the way and had an epiphany that wine is good and wanted to become a winemaker. He moved to Jerome, Az.hooked up with Glomski, bought some land for vineyards and the rest is and will be history! So, you have Arizona Stronghold, Page Springs and Caduceus Wineries. And there others like Oak Creek, Pillsbury, Javelina Leap and more. So where do we go for a taste? There's a little shop in Tlaquepaque in Sedona by the Y next to the Los Abrigados resort called Wild West Wines. They carry wines only from Arizona Wineries and can offer you a tasting of 5 different wines with some cheese and crackers for just $12. Then go west on 89a and take a drive down Page Springs Road and hit Oak Creek Winery's and Page Spring's tasting rooms. Then head on over to Cottonwood in the Old Town section where Stronghold Vineyards just opened a wine tasting shop with Pillsbury soon too follow. When you're done there head on up to Jerome where you can taste the wines from Maynard James Keenan's winery, Caduceus. If you come back via Cornville Road and Beaver Head Flats Road, stop in Aroma in the Tequa Shopping Center in Oak Creek for some more wines and delicious gourmet foods. They are more European with an emphasis on Italin, but if you time your arival around 5:30pm on Thursday nights they have a wine tasting with free appetizers for $15. Its a good deal. Well, good luck getting back to where you're staying! Or have a designated driver, or hire a car, or take a wine tour if you have the money. Its really not that much wine and its spread out over time, so you should be OK, but... error on the side of caution. Some of the places drop the wine tasting fee if you buy a bottle of wine. And there's the t-shirts, wine paraphernalia and even furniture and art to buy, so make a day of it and make sure you have room in your trunk (your car trunk, that is!).

While dining at Elote at the King's Ransom Hotel, we had two glasses of Page Springs Barrio Tinto, a great full bodied red wine, that went well with our meals. Anytime I eat out around Sedona, I'm going to be looking for Page Springs wines!
